The Wayne County George Washington Bicentennial Commission was established in the fall of 1931 to organize local celebrations in recognition of George Washington's 200th birthday. The first meeting was called by Mrs. W.W. Gaar, acting under appointment of Governor Harry Guyer Leslie, and was attended by two representatives of the state commission. George Washington (b. Feb. 22, 1732, Westmoreland County, Va.-d. Dec. 14, 1799, Mount Vernon, VA) was the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797.
